Game Fishing on Rivers
Due to Wales' predominantly rocky terrain covered by hills, mountains, and valleys, the country boasts hundreds of sprawling rivers and streams. Most of these happen to form the ideal habitat for game fish such as our native brown trout, sea trout, and salmon. Another distinctly prised member of the game fish family, the grayling, can be found in prolific numbers in select Welsh rivers.
Game Fishing at Lakes
Wales has over 500 lakes to choose from for game fishing, including scenic glacial mountain lakes as well as wild reservoirs. Wales also has plenty of small stillwater fisheries, well-stocked with specimen trout and featuring excellent facilities on-site. In fact, we have a lake of our own at Lake Country House filled with hard-fighting rainbow trout, open for fishing all year round.
Coarse fishing on Rivers
Whilst you will find game fish in most rivers in Wales, there are also several excellent coarse fishing rivers. The most famous of these and, without doubt, the best coarse-fishing river in the UK is the River Wye, which is conveniently located in the vicinity of the Lake Country House.
You may be able to find such species as barbel, chub, dace, grayling, pike, and perch, all of which grow large. Other good coarse fishing rivers include the River Taff (Cardiff), the River Dee, and the River Severn.
Course fishing at Lakes
Apart from natural lakes and wild reservoirs, Wales also hosts a large number of small stillwater fishery lakes and ponds which can be found all over the country. They are often stocked with coarse fish such as specimen carp, bream, tench, roach, and perch. Large reservoirs and natural lakes that offer fantastic angling for coarse fish are also an option, especially for big bags of bream and monster pike.
Sea Fishing in Wales
With a quick glance on the map, you will find Wales to be surrounded by sea on three sides, so you will never be too far away from the coast. Sea fishing in Wales can be described, above all, as diverse, with multiple species such as bass, cod, pollack, wrasse, smooth-hound, flatfish, rays, bull huss and even sharks.
While sea fishing in Wales is free, you might need a skippered charter boat to hire individually or as part of a group. Although it might be a good idea to check beforehand, it will often also include fishing tackle and bait. Whether you're after a fun fishing day at sea with the family or a sharks-chasing session, it will be a day to remember.
